As an esthetician, I cannot stress enough the importance of hydrating and protecting your skin. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and it’s constantly exposed to environmental aggressors like pollution, UV rays, and temperature changes. All these factors can cause damage to your skin barrier, which can lead to a multitude of skin problems like dullness, dryness, sensitivity, and even premature aging.
The Power of Hydration
So, how can you transform your skin by hydrating and protecting your skin barrier? Let’s start with hydration. When your skin is dehydrated, it can feel tight, itchy, and even painful. That’s because your skin needs water to function properly. When your skin is hydrated, it looks plump, radiant, and healthy. Here are my favorite tips for getting you there:
- Easier said than done, but make sure you’re drinking enough water (at least 8 glasses a day). I have a phone app that lets me track water intake throughout the day to make sure I stay on target! Add lemon, orange slices, or cucumber if you want to add some flavor.
- Use a humidifier in your home or office to add moisture to the air. I keep mine on my nightstand.
- Snack on foods with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumber, and celery, to help hydrate your skin from the inside out.
- Try to make your showers mild and warm, never hot. The hot water can strip away moisture quickly.
- Use a hydrator that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or squalane.
- Limit caffeine and alcohol, which can have a drying effect on the skin.
Protecting the Skin Barrier
Now, let’s talk about protecting your skin barrier; that natural shield that protects your skin from external aggressors. When your skin barrier is compromised, it can’t do its job properly, but how can you protect it? First, avoid using harsh products that can strip your skin of their natural oils. Look for gentle cleansers that won’t disrupt your skin’s pH balance. Second, I always tell my clients to apply Desert Mist to seal in moisture and protect their skin from environmental aggressors. Finally, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, even if you’re indoors. UV rays can penetrate through windows and cause damage even on a cloudy day. Try: Sunsations Nearly Invisible SPF 30 Mineral Powder
